II. Materiality

Guest keynote. Rheim Alkadhi

This lab emerged from conversations between us after the first edition of the IMAGINATION lab in July. We shared research interests and warmly invited multidisciplinary artists and researchers interested in MATERIALITY to join a small group and share their practices.
Materiality is understood here as an activated object, read as a generative medium rather than a passive support or carrier. It can be physical, digital, archival, bodily, or ecological, and it can be excavated in social and political realms, in narratives and actions, even when it is embedded, weightless, wireless, transparent, or silenced. Examining material interrelations helps us question seemingly inevitable histories across cultural, political, and scientific spheres.
Energy offers one way into this inquiry, linking how we understand our local environments and how we think on a planetary scale within and beyond the scientific and the technical. Our memory in this is a material process: energy operates on how things are “remembered” and “forgotten”, stored, lost, or switched off. This perspective lets us ask which materials and histories are kept alive, and which are erased or made invisible.
We would like to extend around these questions: How do abstract concepts turn into instruments and material forms within knowledge and everyday life? How does material function as an element within science-fiction practices, and how does it produce new capacities?
We invite participants to bring their own perspectives on materiality, connected to energy, memory, and science fiction.
The lab welcomes all disciplines, and participation is free. Due to its collaborative and discursive nature, the group size is kept small. We invite artists and researchers whose work closely aligns with the lab’s theme. The speaking language is English.
If you would like to take part, please send a short bio, a link to your work, and a few sentences on why you are interested and how your practice engages with materiality to contact[at]sumac.space by October 23th.
Here is practical information. If you have any further questions, please write to us.
